Hello again. This is part two of my journey through nerd culture series. In this post, I will be discussing how I got into the hit HBO series, “Game Of Thrones.” Just so we're clear, I am not talking about anything that happened in the last season and any other controversial opinions in this post. To hear about that, you will just need to wait for my "unpopular opinion," post.
Game Of Thrones is based on the STILL UNFINISHED book series “A Song of Ice and Fire,” by George R.R. Martin, set in the world of Westeros and Essos, and focused on the political chess game surrounding several families including the Lannisters, Starks (who really just want to stay in the north and be left alone) Baratheon Targaryen, and others who want to rule the seven kingdoms of Westeros and sit on the Iron Throne. There is WAY more than that going on including dragons, some magic, and the lingering fear that the White Walkers (basically ice zombies, which I know people will get mad at me for calling them that but..eh it works) will cross the giant wall protecting the kingdom and kill everyone. Again, there is way more than the description I just gave, but I don’t want this to be too long. The show ran for eight seasons on HBO, and was one of the most popular shows on the channel, and was beloved by many fans (for the most part but, again, will get to that later).
The way I got into the show is honestly a little odd. At the time, I wasn’t watching a ton of new shows or actually anything on HBO, and I knew nothing about this show. About 5 minutes before the first episode premiered, my dad, said to me, “There's this new show called Game of Thrones, wanna watch it,” and I thought…eh why not. So we sat down and watched the pilot and I thought….well this is okay, but it’s just people talking politics and I was pretty bored, but I thought, well I’ll at least watch the next couple of episodes and if I don’t like them then I’ll stop. Then the ending of the pilot happened and I was like HOLY SHIT I NEED TO WATCH THE NEXT EPISODE NOW. My dad and I watched the entire season once the episode premiered, and continued that for every season (for the most part, some of the episodes came out when I was away at college, and I had to wait a WHOLE hour before I could watch). It was one of the first series where I wanted to learn more and found that, oh wow authors sometimes build a whole world and history around their books and it gets really in-depth. It was also one of the first series where I discovered that, oh hey sometimes the main character can die before the season can even end. Really the shows I watched before this was pretty cut and dry and you knew the main characters would survive till the end of the show (god I was naive) then (spoilers) Ned Stark has to go and get his head chopped up 9 episodes into the series…I still remember gasping in shock when that happened and thinking….wait you can do that?
This show always kept me on my toes and I never wanted to miss an episode. And I didn’t, I watched it to the end, and enjoyed all of the hours watching this show, reading about it (well for the most part), and thinking about what could happen next.
