So I was debating on even writing about the Marvel Cinematic Universe in this series, mainly because when I was working on my first draft of this, I felt my feelings on the series really didn’t fit, as I felt..well Dara, you don’t have that much anxiety over these films and for the most part, the people who like these films seem to be positive. But then I was thinking about something that people say about these films and I remember, oh wait that gave me so much anxiety and made me feel that I was that smart. What was that thought…well stick around to my “hot takes,” on the MCU and for now, let me discuss how I got into this film series.
The MCU is based on the Marvel comic series by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby ( or Martin Goodman who I think started everything, really, and Steve Ditko also, I just want to give everyone credit and if I didn’t I apologize). In the mid-2000s there was an idea to create a bunch of films that would share the same universe and therefore our favorite superhero’s could appear in each other's films. The first film in the series was Iron Man in 2008, and after some skepticism about if this would work, all that was put aside in 2012 with the release of the first joint film in the series “The Avengers.” Since then this series has become one of the most beloved and successful film series of all time and has lead to many other series trying to make their own cinematic universe (god bless them they did try.) It has made a fuck ton of money, including “Avengers: Endgame,” becoming the highest-grossing film of all time, and they are still going to this day, with more films, TV shows, and so much more.
I was in high school when Iron Man came out, and really didn’t care that much, I mean at that time I wasn’t really into action films, superheroes, or comic books. However I was hearing about the plan to make these origins stories for these individual superhero’s and then once they were released, they were going to come together in one movie, which to me sounded pretty cool. I ended up watching the first Iron Man at home and really enjoyed it, and wanted to see the others. However I was hearing some not great things about Iron Man 2 and about how they were focusing more on setting up the cinematic universe and less on…well plot, which made me think this wasn’t going to end well. But I thought, well this might fail but I can still have some fun watching Thor.
Then summer 2012 rolled along, and The Avengers finally came out and was huge. It broke a ton of box office records within the first weekend of release and was to everyone's delight, success with both critics and audience, who were happy that well this worked. What was smart about this film was that there was no need to give these characters development, because we had five others films to do that. So we could just put all of these superheroes we’ve met over the past few years and have fun. Seeing this in the theater was so much fun, I even remember the bit where The Hulk beat of Loki getting such a huge laugh from the audience that I couldn’t hear Hulk say “Puny God,” it was great. And as was obvious, these films weren’t going anywhere. They would continue to release two or three films a year, introduce new characters from the comic books, and have become the most successful cinematic universe in the modern era. I am also amazed that they create a for the most part positive fandom where everyone seems to get along and this fandom actually gives me the least amount of anxiety. But it still gives me some. Stay tuned!
